Goodbye Gossip Girl

... see you on January 24. Yes, you've read right: JANUARY 24! That's how long the TV gods make us wait for a new episode of Gossip Girl. The only thing that's worse than seven weeks of winterbreak is three months of summerbreak. But being that the year has 52 weeks, and an average TV show season has only about 24 episodes, this is what we have to endure. Last night's midseason finale gave some closure on the crazy-Juliet-trying-to-kill-Serena storyline, but while closing that door, it opened up about one million other windows! How will Chuck and Serena save Bass Industries? Will Nate be screwed over by his dad- again? Is Ben returning to Gossip Girl and should we care? BLAIR AND DAN??? It has taken less to drive a person crazy, so before you go completely insane, consider these options to keep you busy until Gossip Girl returns:

Watch the DVDs This is the most obvious choice. When there's no new material available, why not go through three previous seasons of awesomeness? You have 49 days to re-watch how it all began, got awesome, got a little less awesome, and returned back to old glory. For the latter, season four episodes are available on a pay-per-episode basis at amazon on demand and iTunes for example.

Read the recaps  Websites like televisionwithoutpity and the Gossip Girl section of NY Mag offer great fun in the form of detailed recaptures of each episode and a reality index, respectively. Even if you've seen all the episodes, this is great fun.

Finally get some school work done ... spend time with your bf, clean your appartment- there are so many things to do now that you have that extra time off Monday nights!

Open Themed Up All Night

The WSU SEB will be putting on many Up All Nights next semester and they want students to give them input on what sort of themes the students would be interested in. The SEB is asking for students to leave comments on its facebook page discussing possible ideas. The ideas could be for themes, foods, crafts, entertainment, or anything else the students can think of. There has been no word on specific dates for next semester's Up All Night series but that information will be released by the SEB soon. For more information about the Up All Night series or the WSU SEB check them out at their facebook page here.

Happy Halloween!

It's that time of year again: Sunday is Halloween! With this guide, you'll be equipped for the scariest holiday of them all.

What to do There is so much going on that it's impossible to list it all, so here's a list of the larger events on campus:
-Starting Thursday, the 12th floor of Orton Hall will be transformed into a Haunted House. If you're brave enough to fight off Southern-themed monsters, "A Nightmare in the Bayou" is open from Thurs, Oct. 28 till Sun, Oct. 31st, from 6 to 10 pm. The cost of entry is one non-perishable food item to be donated to charity.
-On Saturday, McCroskey Hall is hosting the "Spooktacular Dance" in the international hall's lobby. Prizes are awarded for scariest and funniest costume, as well as best couple costume (see advice on costumes below). The fun starts at 9 pm.
-Want to experience a true classic? Then you can't miss the screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" on Halloween! The Residence Hall Association is organizing the event, which will take place in the Todd Auditorium at 2 pm. Doors open at 1.30 pm, and the first one hundred people receive all the necessary props to celebrate the cult movie in style!

What to watch There are tons of great horror movies out there, and the number is growing each year. Here are the categories to choose from:
-The classics: You haven't seen the original "Halloween" movie, "The Exorcist", or "The Shining" ? Then it's about time! Go get them now- but don't watch them by yourself.
-The slasher movies: These are basically the classics of our generation. Among the most fun to watch are "Scream" and "I know what you did last summer". Neve Campbell and Jennifer Love Hewitt really know how to scream. If you feel more like screaming yourself and have a strong stomach, try the first "Saw" movie.
-The kids films: Halloween can be cute and fun, too. After trick-or-treating, treat your inner child to "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", "A Nightmare before Christmas", or Carrie Bradshaw as a witch in "Hocus Pocus".

What to wear Halloween is the one night of the year adults can play dress-up and still be completely socially acceptable!
-Traditional costumes: Not feeling adventurous? Witch, pirate and zombie are all safe bets, and easy to get, too. Every store should have them, and you can also make them yourself without trouble.
-Sexy costumes: Women can take a page from the movie "Mean Girls" and go as slutty mouse/cat/bunny. All it takes is the skimpiest ensemble of underwear in your drawers and a headband with ears according to your choice of animal. Men can bare their chests as Tarzan or a Greek god. For both genders, it's crucial to feel comfortable in your body to pull these costumes off!
-Couple costumes: Having matching costumes does not mean you and your partner should look exactly the same. Matching clothes are lame. But if you're attending a party together, how about going as Bill and Hillary, Caesar and Cleopatra or Bacon and Sunny-side-up? The possibilities are endless.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Man vs. Woman

Over the years, there have been many great feuds between a strong male and an equally strong female. Think Obama vs. Hillary, Merlin vs. Madame Mim,... and Chuck vs. Blair. Yes, the two Gossip Girl characters are at it again. As of Monday night's episode, "A touch of Eva", the former lovers are at war. Not that this is something unheard of. Some of the best episodes of Gossip Girl have revolved around Chuck and Blair fighting, and Monday seemed just like a continuation of their petty feuds. Their relationship is at a pretty... complicated point: Chuck had sold Blair out to his uncle for a business deal, and just when she was about to forgive him, he slept with her arch-enemy. Over the summer, Chuck fell in love with Eva and brought her back to New York from Paris. Blair couldn't take seeing him with another woman and set Eva up, so that Chuck basically kicked her out. As bad as that seems, it's clear for viewers that Blair acted out of love, so Chuck's hateful confrontation at the very end is just plain scary: "This means war, Blair. Me versus you. No limits." In other words: it is ON. Check out next week's episode "Goodbye Columbia" Monday, Oct.11, at 9 pm on The CW.

Homecoming 2010

What could be more entertaining than spending a week of coug spirit with friends from your residence hall or greek chapter? WSU Homecoming 2010 started Sunday night and there are events all throughout the week for you to enjoy! The Student Entertainment Board organized the Lip Sync Competition Sunday night in the CUB, where more than 20 groups performed. In line with the theme "Duck, duck, lose", there were a lot of ducks, but Taylor Swift was portrayed quite frequently as well. The first place went to the Waller-Stevens-Community-WilmerDavis- group, with Chi Omega and Beta Theta Pi being the runner-up.
The fun continued today with the lawn decoration (winner: Stephenson North), and a charity comedy performance at 6 and 9pm.
And there is still a lot to come! Check out the Homecoming 2010 facebook page here (make sure you're logged in) for the week's schedule. Highlights include the Games Night with the Chariot Race Wednesday at 7 pm, the large bonfire Friday at 6pm, and of course the Homecoming football game against the Oregon ducks Saturday at 2pm. GO COUGS!

What To Watch

Fall season is TV show season, with old favorites coming back for more, and lots of exciting newbies. While there are numerous car wrecks that should be avoided at any cost -how about doing calculus homework instead? or knitting?- some of the new shows coming to your screens in just a few days look quite promising. While not all of them will survive long enough to even remember the characters' names, here are suggestions for What To Watch this fall. The selection process has been completely subjective. If you disagree and have picks that are a million times more entertaining, let's hear them!

UNDERCOVERS
A mix between 'Alias' and 'Mr. and Mrs Smith', this spy show looks thrilling. A big plus is that it has J.J. Abrams on board, the mastermind behind fellow spy saga 'Alias' and 'Lost'. Not sure yet whether to tune in? Both the male and the female lead in 'Undercovers' are pretty nice to look at, too.

'Undercovers' premieres Wednesday, September 22, on NBC.

NO ORDINARY FAMILY
If you liked Disney's The Incredibles but consider yourself too old to watch an animated movie, this could be an alternative. N.O.F. is the story of a completely ordinary family that receives super powers after a plane crash.

'No Ordinary Family' premieres Tuesday, September 28, on ABC.

HELLCATS
Everyone needs a guilty pleasure. Depending on how much you want to switch your brain off when relaxing in front of the TV, this show about Cheerleaders might be for you. Here's to hoping for cool cheer routines!

'Hellcats' premieres Wednesday, September 8, on The CW.
